The Grand X-Periment Day 10

10/10/11

29) Terma- Season 4, Episode 9- And at this point, the writers get kind of lazy. When we last saw Mulder, he was being infected with the Black Oil (or the Black Cancer as they call it here). When this episode starts, he is cleared of it. How? Why? Fuck you, that's why. Similarly, there is a part later in the ep when Mulder is hiding at a Russian family's house and the husband walks in with a knife to menace Mulder. The next we see Mulder, he is strolling into a Congressional hearing. They literally pulled one of those "Do I have a story to tell you guys!" "Save it for some other time" interactions. Oy.

Taking a big step back from the whole thing (which you have to do to unravel these convoluted narratives), it appears Krycek just planned the whole thing to screw with the Conspiracy by taking away their only hope of developing a vaccine against the black oil.

There is a badass old Russian agent rocking a cardigan who manages to kill a lot of people. I hope he pops up again. I realized this past weekend that Season 4 originally aired during my freshman year of college so I missed pretty much all of it. I heard about these episodes second hand. It has been kind of cool to see them and get these little pieces of conspiracy (they are still kind of propagating the idea that the conspirators are helping with and fighting against the colonization of Earth). I really want to watch these documentaries that came with my box sets but I must be patient.

30) Memento Mori- Season 4, Episode 14- We jump ahead here to find Scully has learned she has cancer. As foretold back in the Nisei episode, Scully's cancer is brought about by her abduction experience. Mulder and some more rogue clones (do any of them do what they are told?) help Mulder figure out that her doctor is making the cancer worse. The Lone Gunmen get in on the action and there is at least one fun scene with Mulder trapped in a hallway with only a glass quarantine door stopping the barrage of bullets coming at him from a conspiracy agent. Oh, and Skinner makes a Faustian deal with Cancer Man to save Scully's life.

This episode spends a lot of time with very languid (is there any other kind on this show) voiceovers from Scully as she waxes poetic about her impending doom. It is kind of hard to tell how much time passes in this episode, too. I will give it credit for one thing, we get a new piece of info on the conspiracy (the abductions are useful in harvesting women's eggs) and resolve a dangling thread from One Breath (Scully's weird new DNA). This is really an actor's showcase for Gillian Anderson and she handles her melodrama a lot better than Duchovny does. I am kind of shocked that he was the breakout star here.

Tomorrow, I will get to watch a two-parter on the same night! Excitement!
